Digital Equipment Corporation was one of the great minicomputer and workstation companies, producing the PDP series, VAX, Alpha, DECnet, VMS, ULTRIX, Digital UNIX, and many influential networking and terminal technologies.

DEC helped define interactive computing outside the mainframe world and was especially strong in engineering, academia, and technical computing.

Its decline came from strategic missteps during the PC and UNIX workstation transitions, but its technical legacy remains enormous.
